Weekend Getaways on Points: Using Miles and Hotel Points for 2-3 Night Trips

How to use points for short weekend trips — the best US domestic sweet spots, how to pick the right program, and weekend destinations that punch above their points cost.

By The Points Editor

Long-haul business class gets most of the attention in the travel rewards world, but weekend getaways on points can deliver surprisingly high value — especially when hotel rates spike due to local events, holidays, or peak weekends. Spending 20,000 Hyatt points for a 2-night Andaz stay during a sold-out event weekend is just as smart as any business class booking.

The Weekend Getaway Framework

Short domestic trips have two key differences from international award travel:

  1. Flight points are usually modest (5,000–12,000 miles round-trip)
  2. Hotel points per night matter more (you’re only there 2–3 nights)

The weekend play: use inexpensive airline miles for the flight, and hotel points for the accommodation — while keeping both point costs low enough that you can do 8–10 weekend trips per year with a strong points balance.

Best Programs for Weekend Flights

Southwest Rapid Rewards: The king of US domestic short-haul awards. Dynamic pricing tracks closely to cash fares, so when you find a $79 fare, the miles equivalent is modest (~4,500–7,000). Roundtrip flights to nearby cities regularly run 8,000–15,000 Rapid Rewards points. Transfer from Chase UR (1:1.5 to Rapid Rewards, net worth noting).

United MileagePlus: Saver awards for short domestic routes: 5,000–8,000 miles one-way. Chicago to Minneapolis, New York to Boston (when Southwest doesn’t serve it), Houston to Austin — all bookable at low mileage costs.

American AAdvantage: Similar to United for short-haul. Some shuttle markets (DCA-BOS-JFK) at low saver rates.

Best Hotel Programs for Weekends

World of Hyatt — The Weekend Winner

Hyatt’s lower categories (Cat 1–4) include some genuinely good properties at 3,500–15,000 points per night:

  • Hyatt Place and Hyatt House properties: Cat 1–3 (3,500–9,000 pts/night). These are the most reliable value — consistent quality, predictable award availability, and they’re in nearly every US metro area.
  • Andaz and Thompson Hotels: Cat 4–6 (12,000–25,000 pts/night). For a nicer weekend where you want a design-forward urban hotel.

For weekend trips, Hyatt points tend to offer the best CPP because of the fixed category system — a 12,000-point Andaz night during a sold-out concert weekend when cash rates spike to $400 is an excellent redemption.

Hilton Honors — Extensive Coverage

Hilton’s portfolio (Hampton, DoubleTree, Embassy Suites, Hilton) provides massive coverage in secondary US markets. With the 5th Night Free benefit (though rarely applicable to 2-night weekends) and frequent earning from the Amex Hilton cards, Hilton Honors points accumulate fast.

For weekend getaways, look for DoubleTree or Embassy Suites properties in your target city at 25,000–40,000 points per night vs. cash rates of $150–$300.

Best US Weekend Destinations on Points

Napa Valley, California: Cash hotels are expensive ($350–$1,000/night). Marriott and IHG both have options in Napa. Points can make a Napa getaway financially accessible.

Nashville, Tennessee: Major event city (country music, bachelorette tourism) — weekends can see hotel rates spike dramatically. Hyatt and Hilton have strong Nashville coverage.

Chicago, Illinois: Excellent Hyatt presence (Hyatt Regency Chicago, Andaz Chicago). When events push rates up, 20,000–30,000 Hyatt points per night can save $300–$500.

New Orleans, Louisiana: Festivals (Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest) create extreme hotel pricing. Advance-booked award nights months ahead sidestep cash price spikes.

Washington, DC: Cherry Blossom season (late March–mid April) raises hotel prices dramatically. Use Hyatt Andaz (15,000–25,000 points) or Marriott Autograph Collection options.

Miami Beach: Art Basel in December, South Beach Music Festival, and New Year’s Eve create peak hotel pricing. IHG and Marriott both have South Beach locations.

The Weekend Points Budget

A reasonable weekend getaway on points:

  • Flight: 8,000–15,000 miles round-trip (Southwest or United/AA)
  • Hotel: 20,000–40,000 hotel points (2 nights at Hyatt Cat 4–5 or Hilton mid-tier)
  • Total: ~28,000–55,000 points, earning ~4–5 weekends from a single credit card sign-up bonus

With two cards with sign-up bonuses per year (each earning 60,000–80,000 transferable points), you can fund 6–8 weekend getaways on points while still accumulating miles for the occasional international trip. This is the most accessible tier of points travel for most people.

Award pricing reflects typical June 2026 rates. Weekend rates are highly variable by destination and date.
