How to Visit New York City Using Points: Flights and Hotels for 2026

Award travel guide to New York City — flying into JFK/EWR, the best hotel points redemptions in Manhattan, and which programs give the best value in NYC.

By The Points Editor

New York City is one of the most expensive hotel markets in the world. A midtown Manhattan hotel room can cost $400–$800 per night at a mid-tier property; suites at the Peninsula, Park Hyatt, or Mandarin Oriental regularly top $1,500. Knowing which hotel programs offer the best NYC coverage can redirect thousands of dollars toward experiences rather than accommodation costs.

Getting to NYC on Points

New York has two primary international airports: JFK (for Virgin Atlantic, British Airways, and most long-haul carriers) and EWR (United hub, excellent for European carriers).

Best routes by program:

  • Virgin Atlantic Flying Club: The standout option for US-based travelers. Virgin operates its own flights JFK → London and back, with Upper Class saver awards often available at 50,000–60,000 miles from the UK. For international visitors flying INTO JFK: same pricing applies. Transfer from Chase/Amex/Capital One 1:1.

  • British Airways Avios: If you’re traveling from the UK to NYC, Avios on BA metal or Iberia is the natural choice. Outbound JFK–LHR pricing applies in reverse. If you want to route friends or family to NYC for a visit, BA Avios on Iberia at ~35,000 one-way transatlantic business is exceptional.

  • Delta SkyMiles: Delta operates a major hub at JFK. Flash sale pricing during low-demand windows can produce excellent domestic US-to-NYC award pricing. Delta’s dynamic pricing is volatile — value varies dramatically by date.

  • United MileagePlus: From EWR, United’s Polaris Business Class hub offers transatlantic flights. Saver business class EWR-Europe can still appear at 70,000 miles one-way when availability is present.

NYC Tips for the Aware Traveler

Neighborhoods by use case:

  • Midtown (5th Ave/Park Ave): Business meetings, Times Square, Broadway, MoMA. Most hotel options.
  • Downtown/FiDi: Wall Street, 9/11 Memorial, Brooklyn Bridge access. Better points value (Andaz Wall Street).
  • Upper West/East Side: Central Park access, museums. Quieter, slightly less hotel options.
  • Brooklyn (Williamsburg, DUMBO): Cheaper hotels, but add 15–30 minutes to midtown commute via subway.

Transportation: NYC subway remains the fastest way to get around. Get an OMNY card or use a contactless credit card on turnstile readers — no MetroCard purchase needed. Taxis and Uber/Lyft exist for rain/luggage situations.

Hotel award rates reflect typical June 2026 pricing. NYC hotel market is highly variable by season.
