Kyoto on Points: Best Hotels and Getting There for Cherry Blossom Season

Award travel guide to Kyoto — the best hotel points redemptions, why Hyatt wins in Kyoto, how to time Cherry Blossom travel, and trains from Tokyo to Kyoto on points.

By The Points Editor

Kyoto is Japan’s cultural heart — home to 1,600 Buddhist temples, 400 Shinto shrines, 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and the finest ryokan cuisine in the country. It’s also one of the most seasonal travel destinations in the world: during Cherry Blossom season (late March–mid April) and Fall Foliage season (November), hotel rates triple or quadruple from off-peak levels. Points travelers who plan ahead can eliminate accommodation costs during exactly these peak windows.

Getting to Kyoto

Kyoto has no commercial airport. All international arrivals fly into either Tokyo Narita (NRT), Tokyo Haneda (HND), or Osaka Kansai (KIX):

From Tokyo: The Shinkansen (bullet train) from Tokyo Station to Kyoto Station takes ~2 hours 15 minutes. Nozomi and Hikari services run frequently. A Japan Rail Pass covers Shinkansen Hikari services — buy before arriving in Japan. The JR Pass now costs significantly more than it used to, so calculate whether your itinerary justifies the cost vs. individual Shinkansen tickets.

From Osaka (KIX): ~75 minutes by Haruka Limited Express to Kyoto Station. Flying into Osaka and transiting to Kyoto is excellent if your program offers better KIX connections.

Recommended flight path: Most US points programs route well to Tokyo (ANA, Japan Airlines, Singapore Airlines) for a natural Kyoto connection.

Kyoto Hotels on Points

Hyatt Regency Kyoto

The Hyatt Regency Kyoto in Higashiyama is the strongest points redemption in the city. It occupies the city’s heritage district with traditional garden design, exceptional Japanese dining, and tea ceremony experiences:

  • Points: 15,000–25,000 Hyatt points per night (Category 3–5 depending on season)
  • Cash equivalent: ¥35,000–¥120,000 ($225–$780) — upper end during Cherry Blossom peak
  • Value during peak: 3–5¢ per point at Cherry Blossom cash rates
  • Location: 10 minutes from Kiyomizudera temple; walking distance to Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka lanes
  • Transfer: Chase UR → Hyatt (1:1, minutes)

Park Hyatt Kyoto

Opened in 2019, Park Hyatt Kyoto was a major event in Japanese luxury hospitality. The property occupies a hillside in Higashiyama with sweeping mountain views, a dramatic stone entry, and Kyoto’s most celebrated ryokan-adjacent experience in a Western luxury format:

  • Points: 35,000–55,000 Hyatt points per night (Category 6–7)
  • Cash equivalent: ¥80,000–¥300,000 ($520–$1,950) at Cherry Blossom peak
  • What you get: Park Hyatt exclusivity plus traditional Kyoto aesthetics
  • Best combination: Book 5 nights (4 paid + 1 free with 5th night benefit doesn’t apply at Park Hyatt — use anniversary night certificate instead)

Marriott Properties in Kyoto

Hotel Granvia Kyoto (inside Kyoto Station, Autograph Collection): 40,000–70,000 Bonvoy points. Outstanding for train connectivity — literally above the Shinkansen platform. Cash: ¥25,000–¥80,000.

Kyoto Marriott Hotel (near Nijo Castle): 35,000–65,000 Bonvoy points. More central location for temple access.

Timing: When Points Are Most Valuable in Kyoto

Cherry Blossom (late March–mid April): Cash prices peak. Hyatt and Marriott bookings 8–11 months in advance. During full bloom week, rooms at Hyatt Regency that cost 20,000 points represent cash savings of $600–$800 per night. This is the best timing for a points redemption.

Fall Foliage (first to third week of November): Second peak season. Similar pricing dynamics.

Off-peak (June–August, January–February): Points pricing is lower but cash savings are proportionally smaller. Consider whether it’s worth saving points for peak season.

Kyoto Essentials

  • IC Card (Suica/ICOCA): Load it on your phone via Apple Pay or buy a card at any station. Covers all Kyoto buses and subway lines, plus convenience stores.
  • Walking the Higashiyama trail: 2-hour morning walk from Gion (Yasaka Shrine) through Maruyama Park, Kiyomizudera, down Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka. Start at 7am before crowds arrive.
  • Fushimi Inari: An hour southeast of central Kyoto. Visit before 8am or after 5pm for crowd-free path.
  • Day trip to Nara: 45 minutes by Kintetsu from Kyoto. Free-roaming deer and Todai-ji temple. No hotel stay required.

Award prices reflect typical June 2026 pricing. Cherry Blossom and foliage season rates are significantly higher.
