How to Find Award Space on Partner Airlines: A Step-by-Step Guide
The exact tools and techniques for finding business class award availability on partner airlines — United, AA, Flying Blue, KrisFlyer, and more.
One of the most common complaints about award travel is finding open seats. “The website shows no availability!” is the refrain of frustrated beginners. The truth is that award space exists — you just need to know where to look and how to search effectively. This guide covers the tools and techniques that experienced points travelers use daily.
Why Award Search Is Confusing
Airlines manage award inventory in layers:
- Own-metal seats: Flights operated by the airline itself. The airline controls how many award seats to release.
- Partner awards: Seats on partner airlines made available to your program. Availability here depends on what the operating carrier releases — which varies by route, date, and the relationship between the two programs.
Some programs show partner award availability directly online (United shows partners on united.com). Others require you to call (Turkish Miles&Smiles partner awards) or use a third-party search tool.
The Essential Award Search Tools
1. Seats.aero — The Best Multi-Program Search Tool
Seats.aero is the most powerful award availability aggregator available. It searches award space across 16+ programs simultaneously and shows you which programs have availability for any given route and date range.
How to use it:
- Go to seats.aero → Award Search
- Enter origin, destination, and date range
- Select cabin class (economy, business, first)
- Filter by the programs whose miles you have
- Results show which programs have seats available for each date
Seats.aero is subscription-based (~$14/month) but pays for itself if you use it even once for a business class redemption. A free tier provides limited daily searches.
2. United.com — The Best Partner Award Search Tool
United’s award search engine (united.com → Award flights) shows availability not just for United flights but for all Star Alliance partner airlines including Singapore, ANA, Lufthansa, Air India, Turkish, and others.
To search partner awards on United.com:
- Go to united.com
- Click “Book” → “Flights”
- Toggle to “Use miles”
- Enter your origin, destination, and dates
- Look for the “View more options” toggle to see more dates
- When results appear, pay attention to the airline icon — non-United flights are partner awards
United’s search is free and comprehensive for Star Alliance.
3. American Airlines (aa.com) for Oneworld
AA.com shows award availability on American Airlines and many Oneworld partner airlines including British Airways, Cathay Pacific, JAL, Finnair, Iberia, and more.
Navigate to aa.com → “Book” → toggle “Miles” → enter your route.
Note: Not all partner airlines show full availability on aa.com. For Japan Airlines in particular, you may see better availability by searching at jal.co.jp and then calling AA to book.
4. ExpertFlyer — For Power Users
ExpertFlyer is a professional-grade aviation tool that shows award availability in specific booking classes (F, J, Y, etc.). It’s particularly useful for:
- Finding specific premium cabin award classes (e.g., “X class” for ANA First)
- Setting email alerts when award space opens on specific flights
- Monitoring partner availability
ExpertFlyer costs ~$10/month for the basic plan. The award alert feature alone justifies the cost if you’re chasing a specific hard-to-find redemption.
5. Air Canada Aeroplan (aeroplan.com)
Aeroplan searches a broad swath of Star Alliance partners including ANA, Lufthansa, Swiss, Turkish, United, and more. It’s particularly useful for checking availability before transferring Amex or Chase points to Aeroplan.
6. Flying Blue (airfrance.com)
Flying Blue’s search at airfrance.com shows availability on Air France, KLM, and many SkyTeam partners. Most importantly, it shows which dates have Promo Award pricing (flash sale rates that are 25–50% discounted).
To find Promo Awards: go to airfrance.com → Redeem Miles → Check for “Promo” labels on specific dates.
How to Search Effectively
Tip 1: Use a 2–3 month date range Rather than searching a single date, scan 30–60 days at once. Both seats.aero and airline websites allow calendar views that show which dates have availability. Business class award space is usually not on specific dates you want — it’s on the dates the airline decides to release it.
Tip 2: Search one-way before round-trip Round-trip award searches sometimes fail because one direction has availability but not the other. Search each direction separately.
Tip 3: Try nearby airports JFK might show no business class availability to Paris CDG, but EWR or BOS might have it on the same dates. Similarly, LHR vs. LGW, or SIN vs. KUL.
Tip 4: Be flexible on airlines If you want to fly to Tokyo, don’t fixate on ANA. Check United (Star Alliance partners), AA (JAL), Singapore (for onward connections), and Flying Blue (Air France Tokyo service).
Tip 5: Know when airlines release award space
- Most airlines release award inventory ~330–355 days before departure (when the schedule opens)
- United releases partner awards as they become available through the alliance
- Last-minute releases happen within 2 weeks of departure as airlines try to fill premium cabins
When You’ve Found Space: Book Fast
Award availability is not guaranteed to persist. When you find the flight and cabin you want:
- Verify the availability in your chosen redemption program
- Transfer points if needed (but don’t transfer until you’re sure the space is there)
- Complete the booking promptly — don’t browse for hours between finding space and booking
Business class award seats in premium programs can disappear within minutes on popular routes.
