Amex Membership Rewards: Transfer Partners, Sweet Spots, and How to Maximize in 2026

The complete guide to American Express Membership Rewards — best transfer partners, top redemptions for US and India travelers, and how to get 2¢+ per point.

By The Points Editor

American Express Membership Rewards is one of the two dominant transferable points currencies in the US, alongside Chase Ultimate Rewards. With over 20 airline and hotel transfer partners spanning every major global alliance, Amex MR is especially powerful for international award travel — and for Indian travelers who hold Amex cards in India, it opens doors to some of the most prestigious redemptions in the world.

How Amex Membership Rewards Works

You earn Membership Rewards points on American Express cards including the Platinum Card, Gold Card, Green Card, Blue Business Plus, and more. Points pool across all your Amex MR-earning cards automatically.

The program’s value comes almost entirely from transfer partners. Base redemption options like statement credits or Amazon checkout give you roughly 0.6–1.0¢ per point — well below what transfers can achieve.

Transfer Partners (US Program, 2026)

Amex MR transfers to the following partners from the US at 1:1 unless noted:

Airlines:

  • Delta SkyMiles (1:1)
  • Air Canada Aeroplan (1:1)
  • British Airways Avios (1:1)
  • Cathay Pacific Asia Miles (1:1)
  • Emirates Skywards (1:1)
  • Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer (1:1)
  • Air France–KLM Flying Blue (1:1)
  • Avianca LifeMiles (1:1)
  • Iberia Plus (1:1)
  • Finnair Plus (1:1)
  • Etihad Guest (1:1)
  • ANA Mileage Club (1:1,000 — meaning 1,000 Amex points = 1,000 ANA miles)
  • Aeromexico Club Premier (1:1.6, meaning 1,000 Amex = 1,600 Club Premier miles)

Hotels:

  • Marriott Bonvoy (1:1)
  • Hilton Honors (1:2 — 1,000 Amex MR = 2,000 Hilton points)

Transfer times vary: most airlines are instant or same-day; Singapore KrisFlyer and some others can take 1–5 business days.

The Best Amex Membership Rewards Redemptions

1. ANA First Class — The Aspirational Sweet Spot

ANA (All Nippon Airways) First Class is widely considered one of the finest long-haul products ever put in the sky. The cabin features private suites with closing doors, a multi-course dining experience, and impeccable Japanese hospitality.

The best way to book it with Amex points: transfer to Virgin Atlantic Flying Club (which accepts Amex transfers), and use those miles to book ANA First Class at 55,000 miles one-way. There are no fuel surcharges.

Alternatively, you can transfer Amex to ANA directly at 1:1 and book ANA First Class NYC–Tokyo from roughly 150,000 ANA miles round-trip.

The cash price for this seat typically exceeds $10,000 round-trip. The point redemption yields one of the highest CPP values available: often 10–20+ cents per Amex point.

2. Air Canada Aeroplan for Star Alliance Awards

Aeroplan is one of the most underrated Star Alliance redemption programs. Key advantages:

  • No fuel surcharges on most awards
  • Mix-and-match Star Alliance partners in a single itinerary
  • Stopover awards allowed in some cases
  • Good pricing for India routes via Air India (Star Alliance member)

Example: Mumbai to London via Air India business class can be booked for roughly 60,000 Aeroplan miles one-way. Transfer Amex to Aeroplan at 1:1.

3. Delta SkyMiles for Partner Awards

Delta SkyMiles has variable (dynamic) pricing, which sometimes makes redemptions excellent and sometimes expensive. The program shines most when booking partner flights — particularly Air France and KLM in business class. Watch for Flying Blue Promo Awards (which you can also access by transferring directly to Flying Blue).

Delta’s business class on transatlantic routes can sometimes price at 50,000–70,000 miles one-way when award inventory is available.

4. Avianca LifeMiles — Star Alliance at Fixed Rates

LifeMiles has maintained a mostly fixed award chart and prices Star Alliance business class competitively. The program charges no fuel surcharges and allows booking of United, Lufthansa, Singapore, and other Star Alliance partners.

Example: US to Europe in business class on Lufthansa via LifeMiles: approximately 63,000 miles one-way. Transfer Amex → LifeMiles.

5. Hilton Honors at 1:2 Transfer Ratio

While 1:2 sounds unattractive on the surface, Hilton points are most valuable at aspirational properties. The Conrad Maldives and other top Hilton properties can be booked for 60,000–120,000 Hilton points per night, and Hilton’s Fifth Night Free benefit on award stays effectively reduces the cost by 20%.

If you have a large Amex balance and want a Maldives stay, transferring to Hilton at 1:2 and using the Fifth Night Free can be extremely effective.

Amex India Membership Rewards

For cardholders holding Indian Amex cards (Platinum, Gold, etc.), Membership Rewards India functions similarly but with a different set of transfer partners and ratios. As of 2026, common partners include:

  • British Airways Avios (1:1)
  • Marriott Bonvoy (1:1)
  • Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer (ratio varies — verify at time of transfer)
  • Air France–KLM Flying Blue (ratio varies)

The best strategy for Indian Amex cardholders is typically to transfer to British Airways Avios for short-to-medium haul European routes, or to Singapore KrisFlyer for international flights via Singapore.

Important: Indian Amex transfer partners and ratios differ from the US program and change more frequently. Always check the current transfer ratio at americanexpress.com/in before transferring.

Earning Amex MR Points

The best Amex earning cards in the US:

  • Platinum Card: 5x on flights booked directly with airlines and via Amex Travel
  • Gold Card: 4x on US restaurants and US supermarkets
  • Blue Business Plus: 2x on everything (up to $50k/year) — the best everyday earning rate available

For Indian cardholders, the Amex Platinum India earns Membership Rewards on all spends, with accelerated earn on dining and international transactions.

Transfer Bonuses — Watch for These

Amex periodically offers transfer bonuses to specific partners (typically 20–30% bonus miles for a limited window). These are some of the highest-value opportunities in the points world. When a 30% bonus is offered on, say, Singapore KrisFlyer or Avianca LifeMiles, the effective CPP can reach well above 3 cents per Amex point on business class redemptions.

Subscribe to points newsletters (including ours) to catch these bonuses.

The One Rule: Don’t Let Membership Rewards Expire

Amex MR points expire if your account is closed or if you haven’t had any qualifying Amex activity in 12 consecutive months. Keep at least one Amex card active and make at least one purchase per year. Points don’t expire as long as your account remains open and in good standing.

Amex MR transfer partners and ratios verified against americanexpress.com as of June 2026. Program terms can change; always confirm current partners and ratios before transferring.
